What is the Sony Mavica?

The lineage behind the Mavica brand name comes from the early 1980s when Sony developed and produced a prototype still video camera. The name 'Mavica' comes from an amalgamation of the words Magentic Video Camera (MA VI CA) using magnetic media for recording, and intially sensors borrowed from moving video cameras.

The range ran from the late 1980s with the 2.0" video floppy format, until 2003 with the demise of the 1.44MB 3.5" floppy and 8cm Mini-CD formats for use with the digital cameras. The brand was then replaced by the already running Cyber-Shot series (from 1996) and the Alpha series (from 2006).

The main catchment of this site is to document the floppy disk series of MAVICA cameras; starting from the MVC-FD5 and FD7 in 1997, ending with the MVC-FD100 and FD200 in 2002, and covering all the models made in the middle, too.

We are always looking for images (preferably 640x480) and any scans of relevant information or documentation in relation to the original MAVICA floppy disk cameras. You can contact us here with anything you have to offer. We will be sure to credit you! :-)

Our scanned documents are typically either in Bitmap or JPEG image formats, or in PDF files. For the latter, you will need Adobe Acrobat or a similar PDF viewer software. These can be found easily on-line.
